Ode to a dog walker

I started thinking about Mr. Barrett today after hearing/reading some stuff. Usually on my walk to the bus stop every morning I would see him walking the dog around the block. And I'm not sure whether he knew who I was or if he was just doing it because he would pretty much see me every day at the same time, but he would always give me a smile if I threw a glance his way. That smile would often change my outlook on the day quite significantly... all it took was a smile.

The fact that I knew him more or less solely as "Johanna's dad" and "the guy I see walking the dog every morning" really makes me feel like I should be getting to know people better. You'd never know if someone could have been a really great friend of yours or something if you never gave it a shot. Then you realize this when such options are no longer available to you. Just something to think about...

... I don't claim to even begin to realize what something like this must feel like for someone. I have never experienced a major loss in the family. So I really have no idea what to say or how to relate to this with anyone. So instead of trying to say anything, I made that picture.

Hand sketches... with thumbs attached

And here are the hand sketches. They're drawn using a book by one George B. Bridgman, an artist, and master of anatomy. Who is also dead. Death aside, his books are really great for learning anatomy which is extremely important. It includes skeletal structure, muscles, and uses for every single part on the human body ( well, minus a few I guess : / ) .

Oh and as a sort of easter egg, or if you're really bored or something... see if you can spot something strange in the sketches on the second page.

New sketches

I haven't really sketched anything new since my last post but I guess according to the rules I still have to post something by the end of the week. If I remembered to take my personal sketchbook home I have some sketches of hands that I can scan in tomorrow... although not the most exciting thing it's better than nothing. I'll try and remember to do it before going to John's super amazing thing tomorrow.

In the Darker Side of Town

This is proabaly a bit late but... On the service trip there was this one guy that Jonathan, John, and myself met named Michael MacKenzie, (I think that's what he said his name was, correct me if I'm wrong guys :S ) he was lying down in the grass when we met him. So today while I was thinking of the trip and how I'm no good at that phylisophical/thought-provoking writing stuff, I thought I would try and draw something that I remembered from it instead. I can't remember exactly what he looked like, but this is as best as I could picture him.

For anyone who's curious I did this in black ball-point pen and grey markers (which apparently turn a purple-y colour when used over pen).

So Answers the Apprentice:

As promised, here is the return of our friend "The Back". And I'd also like to suggest to all you little aspiring artists out there,(not that I'm in any position to be giving you advice) this is an awesome and very helpful way of putting your shading skills to practise. You don't necessarily have to use naked people, but at least something that has a very solid form that you can understand. Then as long as there is an intense shadow, or light, on whatever you're using it will be much easier to draw. Have fun, and don't get me in trouble if your parents find you looking up naked people on the internet :( .

Training

Some of us may have seen this already but that's okay, this is just a test.

Here we are...

'Your greatest enemy is yourself.

Mastering others makes you strong, but mastering yourself makes you fearless.'

Well I thought I'd make a new blog because my old one just plain sucked. There's nothing stopping this one from sucking too but hopefully it won't come to that. And uh... I think I'm going to open up the lines for some kind of suggestions as to what I can do with this blog, if there's anything someone thinks I could do regularly without too much trouble go ahead and tell me. Anything is fair game.

Except for poetry or creative literature and stuff.
